Decluttering Before a House Move

Moving house is exciting. New chapter. Fresh start. Blank walls full of possibility.

It is also 73% cardboard boxes and 27% “WHY do we own this?”

If you do one thing before you move – declutter.

Not after.
Not “once we’re in.”
Before.

Because packing up clutter just means you’re paying to move it… so you can unpack it… and then eventually declutter it six months later while muttering, “Why did we bring this?”

Let’s not do that to yourself.

First: Space Is Still at a Premium (Even If the New House Is Bigger)

Yes, the new place may have an extra cupboard.
Yes, there might be a garage.
No, it is not a storage facility for things you don’t use.

If you have too much stuff now, you will still have too much stuff there.

More space doesn’t fix clutter. It just spreads it out.

Declutter first. Pack second.

Break It Down So You Don’t Spiral

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, that’s completely normal. A whole house is a lot.

So don’t start with “the house.”

Start with:

  • One drawer
  • One shelf
  • One category (e.g. mugs, towels, shoes)
  • One cupboard

Make it measurable. Finishable. Contained.

Small wins create momentum. Momentum keeps you moving. And before you know it, the random “bits” drawer has been conquered.

The Aspirational Self Strikes Again

Moving house has a funny way of making us nostalgic.

Suddenly you’re holding:

  • The bread maker from your “I’ll bake every weekend” era
  • Craft supplies from your “I might start an Etsy shop” phase
  • Exercise equipment that mostly functions as a clothes rail

We all buy things for our aspirational selves.

But a move is the perfect time to ask:
Am I keeping this for the life I imagine… or the life I’m actually living?
Keep items for who you are and the life you’re living today.
If you haven’t used it in this house, what are the chances it’s suddenly becoming essential in the next one?

Be honest. Future You doesn’t want to unpack that box either.

Please Don’t Pack the Dirty Doormat

I say this with love.
Do not unpack:

  • The faded towels that have seen better decades
  • The bobbly old bedding you don’t even like
  • The threadbare bath mats
  • The grubby back door mat

You are moving into a lovely new property. Let it feel lovely.
New space, fresh energy.

There is something incredibly deflating about placing a tired, stained doormat into a clean new hallway. Let the move be a reset.

Remember: Clutter Costs Money

The more you move, the more you pay.

Why spend money transporting items you’re unlikely to use on the other side?

Removal companies charge by volume. Vans fill up. Boxes stack high. Every unnecessary item adds time, effort, and cost.

Decluttering before you move is financially smart – not just emotionally satisfying.

Show Your Home in Its Best Light

If you’re selling, this part really matters.

As Kirstie Allsopp said,
“Nothing devalues a property as much as clutter.”

And she’s right.

You want your home to shine:

  • In the photographs
  • On Rightmove
  • During viewings

Buyers need to see the space, not your stuff.

Clear surfaces.
Less crammed cupboards.
Room to breathe.

And don’t forget curb appeal.

Stand outside your home. Walk up to it as if you’re seeing it for the first time. What do you notice? Overflowing bins? Shoes piled by the door? A hallway that feels cramped?

Now walk through your house as a buyer would.

Be objective. Be curious. What feels spacious? What feels crowded?

You’re not criticising. You’re preparing.

If You Don’t Declutter, You’ll Be Organising Forever

Here’s the truth: if you pack everything, you’ll just be reorganising it endlessly in the new house.

Decluttering before you move means:

  • Faster packing
  • Easier unpacking
  • Calmer settling in
  • A home that works from day one

Moving is hard enough. Don’t add “sort out years of accumulated stuff” to the to-do list after you’ve already exhausted yourself.
