Photos tell the story of our lives. They capture the people we love, special occasions, family holidays and those everyday moments that become precious over time.
But if you’re anything like many of my clients, those memories can end up scattered across drawers, stuffed into boxes in the loft, or hidden away in cupboards where they’re rarely looked at.
Instead of bringing happiness, they can become another thing on the to-do list.
The good news is that sorting through old photos doesn’t mean getting rid of your memories. It simply means making it easier to enjoy the ones that matter most.
Start Small
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to tackle every photo they’ve ever owned in one go.
Don’t!
Choose one small collection to begin with. That might be:
- One shoebox of loose photographs.
- A single photo album.
- A pile of framed pictures that have been sitting in the loft for years.
Giving yourself a small, manageable task makes the process far less overwhelming.
Keep the Photos That Make You Smile
As you go through your pictures, ask yourself:
- Does this bring back a happy memory?
- Would I be sad if this disappeared?
- Is this a moment I’d like future generations to see?
If the answer is yes, keep it.
If it’s blurry, duplicated, or you can’t remember who the people are, it’s perfectly okay to let it go.
You don’t need six nearly identical photos of the same family gathering!
Don’t Feel Guilty
Many people tell me they feel guilty throwing photographs away.
Remember, your memories don’t live in the photo itself.
They live with you.
Keeping every single picture doesn’t make those memories any stronger. In fact, having fewer photos often means you’ll look through them more often because they’re easier to find and enjoy.
Think About Other Family Members
Before you part with family photographs or portraits, ask whether another relative would love to have them.
A cousin, sibling or adult child may treasure something that no longer has a place in your home.
Passing them on can feel much better than simply disposing of them.
Organise What You Keep
Once you’ve chosen your favourites, give them a proper home.
You could:
- Store them in labelled photo boxes.
- Create albums by year or family member.
- Scan them so they’re safely backed up digitally.
- Display a few special favourites around your home instead of keeping dozens hidden away.
The aim is to make your memories easy to enjoy rather than tucked away collecting dust.
Let Your Home Reflect Your Life Today
Framed portraits that have been sitting in the loft for years don’t have to stay simply because you’ve always had them.
If they no longer fit your home or no longer feel meaningful, it’s okay to move them on, replace them with more recent memories or reuse the frames.
Your home should celebrate the life you’re living now as well as honouring the past.
A Final Thought
Decluttering sentimental items is never about forgetting people or special moments. It’s about creating space for the memories that mean the most.
When your favourite photographs are easy to find, beautifully displayed or carefully stored, you’ll enjoy them far more than if they’re hidden in a box you’ll never open.
And that’s what organising is really about, keeping the things that add value to your life and letting go of the rest with kindness.
